'Tis the season for ... accidental gay and trans bird representation. It's hilarious to watch people who don't know anything about birds design things.
We could all use a little light-hearted critique to distract from the very real critiques you may hear during the holiday season. Today's post, thankfully, is not at all important...unless you're a birder.
Thank you so much! I truly am grateful for all our readers and supporters.
I mean it when I say I couldn't do it without you.
If you find uplifting and informative content for trans folks and allies important, you should contribute financially or share with others so we can continue this crucial work together.
First, I need to let you in on the secret so we can chuckle at these together. Male cardinals have brilliant red feathers. Female cardinals are also beautiful, I think, and have a more faded, brown-to-orange hue.

So when conservatives design these gorgeous Christmas cards with two bright red birds on them, it's totally an accidental gay cardinal couple.

This doesn't stop with cardinals.
Mallard ducks also have male and female colors. Specifically, male mallards in breeding plumage have a dark green head, a white collar, and gray backs. Ducklings are brown and yellow. Females and males in eclipse plumage are brown.

Now that we all understand what ducks look like, check out this mommy duck and ducklings plush toy:

Okay, not only is the mommy duck in male mallard colors, but the baby ducks are in adult male mallard colors!!
And don't ask me why the ducklings can be zipped inside the adult. 😅
Although gay cardinals are mostly found on Christmas items due to their bright red plumage, male ducks can be found celebrating other holidays. Check out this menorah with "one large duck and eight baby ducklings" - all adult male colors!

Let's all be on the lookout for accidentally queer holiday items - send me a photo if you find anything good!
We'll be back next week with more informative content and a very exciting collaboration. Stay tuned!
