Some personal thoughts: I chose not to join Substack for over a year because they were giving anti-trans creators funding advances to start publications. (https://doyles.substack.com/p/in-queers-we-trust-all-others-pay)

I eventually joined because Substack is the best platform for writing, growing, and monetizing a newsletter and I’ve found a great community here.

I remain troubled that Substack’s leadership profits from hate speech. This is not about freedom of speech, this is about who gets helped to reach a huge audience and who takes the money without regard for the people this content may hurt.

Rey, thank you for writing and publishing this & for taking a stand. As a lot of us saw last week with the Congressional hearing into antisemitism on campuses, the concept of free speech is wonderful and important in theory, but highly imperfect in practice...and is sometimes used to hide questionable practices -- as with Substack apparently!

Thanks, Paul. I don't wish to take credit for writing this letter as it was a group effort. Totally agree that the idea of free speech can be used to hide questionable practices. Great point.
